 Hello 204 families,

September 28 - October 2,

Here is a quick recap of our week:

Language - we are continuing to practice writing topic sentences, supporting information and details. We collaboratively wrote a paragraph about the story Joe’s Junk and highlighted the need to write in full sentences and always support our thinking. Students will begin to write responses to the books they have chosen to read during independent reading. Students should have a book they can read each day.

In art we are learning about different First Nation, Metis and Inuit artists in Canada. We have used watercolor to paint circles with vivid colours that convey feelings. Our inspiration was Alex Janvier of the Cold Lake First Nations in Alberta. Next we will explore Annie Pootoogook’s pen and coloured pencil drawings of life in Kinngait, northern Canada.

Numeracy - we continue practicing our number sense through group skip counting, outdoor math games and exercises from Jump math. The new math curriculum includes a socio emotional component to math. 204 will  learn tools to manage challenging emotions related to math practice. We have been discussing how emotions can be complex, the need to give someone space if they need it and to be active listeners.

Science and technology - we have been learning about the amazing world of bees and their contributions to our way of life. It is my hope to blend this learning with the Minecraft Education Edition’s Build we Bees World. We also have access to flowers around McMurrich that can add to our understanding of Habitats and Communities (Grade 4 Science and Technology Curriculum).

We are now all officially logged into CS First Scratch Coding (https://scratch.mit.edu/) and Everfi (https://everfi.com/blog/k-12/digital-citizenship-for-students-stem-with-responsibility/). Both these programs do not require any identifying information from students as they log in with a class code. Students are welcomed to work on Scratch at home.

Thank you for continuing to remind students about the importance of masks in the classroom and for bringing in your signed health forms each day.
