First Week Back with 204

It was a busy week in 204. As mentioned here is a quick snapshot of our week:

Language - we have been practicing summarizing stories. The goal is to condense what we learn into one paragraph. We are also reading a variety of Indigenous stories including the Lily Root (Ojibway) and The Granddaughter Who was Eaten by A big Fish (Cree). Numeracy - we are reviewing math and beginning the year with Number Sense practice. We have been practicing addition and subtraction. I have been using JUMP Math as my primary mathematics resource. The program focuses on daily math practice and incrementally moving forward with math in a way that invites all students to see themselves as mathematicians. Caregivers: We are slowly getting all students set up on devices so we can begin our coding and digital literacy journey. Students are encouraged to write using tools like devices when traditional methods have been identified as barriers to learning. If you are comfortable sending a device with your child, we can store it in our locked tech closet. 

Outdoor learning: we are using outdoor spaces as much as possible to allow students masks breaks and to encourage Daily Physical activity (DPA). Students are encouraged to dress for the weather and be prepared to be outdoors. Running shoes and comfortable clothing are also encouraged.

Reminder: This Wednesday September 30th we will be observing Orange Shirt Day in recognition of Survivors of Residential Schools. We have been reading stories such as "When I was Eight" as an entry point into discussions of the Residential School system in Canada. Students can wear an Orange Shirt to show their support.
